daughters, mothers, grandmothers and other sexual outlaws – Victoria, BC

A photo project co-curated by Inter Pares and three international social justice organizations to document sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) activism in Bangladesh, El Salvador and the Philippines. The project will be exhibited in Victoria in February 2025 at Central Branch, 2nd floor of The Greater Victoria Public Library from February 11-21st, 2025. Admission is free. The display will also be exhibited at VIRCS beginning February 13, 2025, and UVIC during the Gender Empowerment Centre’s FemXpo, March 3-7th in the SUB Upper Lounge.

daughters, mothers, grandmothers and other sexual outlaws showcases intergenerational efforts to advance sexual health and rights in contexts that are hostile towards bodily autonomy for girls, women and gender-diverse people. This work is essential—and comes with great risk.

daughters, mothers, grandmothers and other sexual outlaws is provocative, inspiring and empowering as it highlights the global struggle for sexual health and rights. The exhibit aims to deepen understandings of what activism looks like around the world. We also hope it activate engagement through the consideration around longstanding and urgent struggles to access reproductive health services, both globally and in Canada.

A group of adolescents participate in a cycling rally to raise awareness about the dangers of child marriage and sexual harassment in the village of Pakerhat, in the northwest of Bangladesh. They are all members of the Adolescent Sexual Harassment and Child Marriage Prevention Committee.  Many conservative people in the villages consider it inappropriate for girls to ride bicycles, so even by riding around their community they make a radical political statement. In the rally, they go further, stopping to make speeches to raise awareness about early and forced marriage, and sexual harassment. As one participant noted to Nijera Kori field staff in 2023, “As young girls, we have aspirations for our future, but early marriage disrupts our education and limits our opportunities.” Their bicycle rallies are radical strides towards shifting deeply rooted dynamics that subject girls to cycles of violence.
